S4 Art & Design

Creativity continues to be increasingly important and sought after in this visual world and the development of learners’ creativity is the main focus of all Art and Design courses.
Creative skills covered in Art and Design include:
• generating ideas by applying your imagination
• taking risks
• observing and recording
• team work
• thinking, questioning and analysing
• experimenting with multiple possibilities
• developing practical expertise in handling materials
• reflecting on and self assessing your work and the work of others
• producing outcomes
• presentation
The course builds on learners’ prior experiences, outcomes and achievements also providing opportunities to develop or consolidate other skills for life, learning and work including wider literacy skills.
The unit structure of the courses is as follows:
National 3
Art and Design: Expressive (9 SCQF credit points)
Art and Design: Design (9 SCQF credit points)
This course is internally assessed.
National 4
Art and Design: Expressive (9 SCQF credit points)
Art and Design: Design (9 SCQF credit points)
Art and Design: Practical Activity (6 SCQF credit points)
This course is internally assessed.
National 5
There are two mandatory units in this course:-
Art and Design: Design
plus an added value practical activity (9 SCQF credit points)
Art and Design: Expressive
plus an added value practical activity (9 SCQF credit points)
At this level, the course assessment consists of a portfolio of work sent away for external assessment and a question paper.
80% of marks are allocated to the portfolio and 20% of marks to the question paper.
